Khaa, Daal, Dhaal (خ د ذ)

Two new shapes to spot

Khaa, Daal, and Dhaal introduce two new shapes. Khaa shares last lesson's rounded 'boat' shape, with one dot on top. Daal and Dhaal are a small hook shape sitting below the line — Daal has no dot, Dhaal has one dot on top. These two are easy to mix up at first, so go slowly and check the dot each time.

خ

khaa (kh)

A raspy sound, like the 'ch' in Scottish "loch" or German "Bach".

Say it: Khaa has one dot on top of the boat shape (same base as Haa/Jeem). Clear your throat gently, as if you had a small tickle.

د

daal (d)

Sounds like the 'd' in "door".

Say it: Daal is a small hook below the line with no dot. Say "d" as in "door".

ذ

dhaal (dh)

Sounds like the 'th' in "this" (voiced).

Say it: Dhaal is the same hook shape as Daal but with one dot on top. Say "th" as in "this", not "think".

دُب

dubb

bear

Which letter has no dot at all?
