Prophet Hud

Hud and the people of 'Aad

Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) was sent by Allah to a strong and famous people called 'Aad. They were tall and very powerful, and they built great, towering buildings that everyone admired. But sadly they had forgotten Allah, and they worshipped statues that they made with their own hands instead. Allah, in His mercy, chose Hud from among them — as their very own brother — to remind them gently and lovingly of the One who had given them all of their strength.

One simple message

Hud's message was short, clear, and beautiful: worship Allah alone, for you have no god at all except Him. He reminded the people of 'Aad that it was Allah who had made them so strong, and Allah who had given them gardens, animals, water, and comfortable homes. All that Hud asked was that they thank their generous Lord for these gifts, and that they stop bowing down to statues that could not hear them, could not see them, and could not help them in any way. Hud never asked his people for money or reward — he only ever wanted good for them.

Hud · 11:50

Wa ilaa 'aadin akhaahum Hoodaa; qaala yaa qawmi' budul laaha maa lakum min ilaahin ghairuhooo in antum illaa muftaroon

"And to 'Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him.'"

Say it: This is Hud's whole message in one line. Say it with your child: worship Allah alone — there is no god but Him.

Strength is a gift, not a reason for pride

The people of 'Aad were very proud of their strength, and they boasted, saying, 'Who is stronger than us?' They had forgotten that their strength was only a gift, lent to them by Allah. Hud warned them kindly, again and again, that being proud makes a person's heart hard and blind. He was patient and never rude, always hoping their hearts would soften. But most of them turned away and kept on worshipping their statues. Through it all, Hud stayed honest and patient, and he never once changed his true message just to please the people or to make them like him.

Al-A'raaf · 7:65

Wa ilaa 'aadin akhaahum Hoodaa; qaala yaa qawmi' budul laaha maa lakum min ilaahin ghairuh; afalaa tattaqoon

"And to the 'Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Then will you not fear Him?'"

Say it: The same call appears in a second surah — Allah repeats Hud's kindness. Ask your child: what one thing did Hud keep asking his people to do?

Allah saves those who believe

Because the people of 'Aad refused for so very long, and grew more and more proud, a mighty wind was finally sent upon them as they had been warned. But Allah, in His great mercy, saved Prophet Hud and the small group of believers who had listened and believed along with him. They were kept safe and sound because they had trusted their Lord and obeyed Him. Hud teaches us a lasting lesson: real strength is not big muscles or tall towers at all — real strength is a soft, humble, grateful heart that worships Allah alone and thanks Him for every gift. So whenever Allah gives us something good, we say alhamdulillah and stay humble, always remembering that every single gift is a kindness from our generous Lord.
