Surah An-Nas
Let's learn Surah An-Nas together
Surah An-Nas is one of the shortest surahs in the Quran, so it is a lovely place to start. It has six short ayat, and in each one we ask Allah — the Lord, the King, and the God of all people — to keep us safe from harmful whispers. Say the whole surah together slowly, one ayah at a time, and let your child repeat after you.
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ
Qul a'udhu bi-rabbi n-nasSay, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind."
Say it: Read it in four gentle steps: Qul (say) — a-'oo-thu (I seek refuge) — bi-rab-bi (in the Lord) — an-naas (of the people). Let your child echo each step back to you.
مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Maliki n-nasThe Sovereign of mankind.
Say it: Two words: Malik (the King) — an-naas (of the people). Allah is the King of everyone.
إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Ilaahi n-nasThe God of mankind,
Say it: Ilaah (the God) — an-naas (of the people). Only Allah is worthy of worship.
مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ
Min sharril-waswaasil-khannaasFrom the evil of the retreating whisperer -
Say it: Min sharr (from the harm) — al-waswaas (the whisperer) — al-khannaas (who slips away). We ask Allah to protect us from bad whispers.
ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Alladhee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-nasWho whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind -
Say it: Alladhee yuwaswisu (who whispers) — fee sudoor (in the chests) — an-naas (of the people).
مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ
Minal-jinnati wa n-nasFrom among the jinn and mankind."
Say it: Minal-jinnati (from the jinn) — wan-naas (and the people). Whispers can come from jinn and from people, and Allah keeps us safe from both.
